So be a better boss

Make “I get to be my own boss” feel as good as it sounds.

As small business owners, we forget we’re our own bosses. Sure, when people ask why we stepped away from the snuggly, cozy, down-alternative comfort of a regular paycheck, we say, “So I get to be my own boss.”

But if we’re our own bosses, why do we act like the jerk boss we hate? Why do we give our “employee” (that is, ourselves) more work than even Superwoman Joanna Gaines could handle? Why the heck do we make our “employee” do everything — all the marketing tactics, with no real strategy to speak of, just to feel like (or worse, just look like) we’re doing everything we can to make it work?

We suffer prolonged, self-inflicted deaths (dramatic, but I mean that literally) because small business owners, as our own bosses, are completely unreasonable.

So be a better boss. Be the kind of boss you always said you wanted, back when you were working in the corporate world.

Be the boss who has her crap figured out, who has her plan in place, who acts strategically and not on a whim. The boss who gives her employees reasonable tasks in a reasonable time frame.

Be the boss who gives her employees an extra half day off before Labor Day weekend. Be the boss who cares about her employee’s long-term goals, not just the urgent tasks that have to get done. Be the boss who understands when there’s no school for 6 months because of a freakin’ global pandemic. Be the boss who wants her employee to go home and cook dinner and play and snuggle and read a book.

Make “I get to be my own boss” feel as good as it sounds.
