You don't need more money today

Instead, you need more money for your time.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you don’t need anything from Target today. As a reformed Target addict, I need to hear that every day.

Same goes if your vice is Amazon, Wayfair, Newegg, Home Depot, rummage sales, or Seed Savers (I may be one of the few addicted to heirloom, old-world ground cherry seeds, though).

I'll one-up that:

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but as a fellow small business owner, you don’t need more money today. You need more money for your time.

You don’t need half a million in sales. You need a spontaneous afternoon off to explore two square feet of the lawn with your kid.

You don’t need a thousand more customers. You need to observe what your current customers like about you and do more of that to build consistency, which builds loyalty.

Unless you’re Baskin Robins and your whole premise is built on 31 flavors, you don’t need more products. You need fewer products — just the ones that SELL.

And clearly, nobody needs a $25 Target Hearth & Hand sign that says, "Wash & Fold" today. (who buys decor to commemorate the epic trip to the laundry room?!??)

You need time to do what you love.

It’s scary to pare down your possessions, it's scary to focus your business (that always-there voice asking, "But what if I need this?"), and it's incongruous to think small in a world that thinks more bigger = better.

No, more bigger ≠ better.

It's scary, until you realize how much easier your business is when you know precisely what you do and who you do it for and ignore the rest.

Until you realize that THAT is the easiest way to do your marketing.

And until you realize you can make more money for the time you put in, and that's worth working through.

P.S. Is this what you needed to hear today? what are you thinking about? Tell me in the comments.

P.P.S. Hearth & Hand's organic cotton sheets are the softest I’ve ever owned. Gah. I’m a perfect sucker for that stuff.
